The 1st NCR Interschool Gymnastics Championship (Sponsored by fitness365) organised at Genesis Global School. Schools from Gurgaon, Delhi and Noida participated. Good to see schools focusing on the development of Gymnastics in an organised way.

The session was moderated by Mr. Sujit Panigrahi, CEO, Fitness365. These were the points discussed during the session:

Ms. Sunita Godara mentioned the following points: Local Sports Stars to cash on, Sensitive Parents, Breaking the myth, Safety Environment, Scrutiny of Coaches/Women Co-ordinators, Exploitation of Girl Athletics, More involvement in Sports Administration, Broadbasing/bringing equality between men and women, Sports and Fitness Pyramid, Interested administrators should run bodies, Equal Prize Money for men and women athletes, Create awareness of Physical Health and Sports Campaign, Good Ethics and Governance

Ms. Penny Simonds from SIT New Zealand highlighted the importance of New Zealand and India harnessing each other’s strength (NZ challenge is people, India’s challenge is Infrastructure). SIT has signed a memorandum with FICCI in area of Infrastructure, Sports Science and Coaching. She spoke about utilizing India Population as strength. She mentioned Family, Employment and Competitive options as barriers of empowerment.  Ms. Simonds mentioned about the importance of Role Models/Celebration of womanhood, Spreading the message of Being Healthy and Strong, Encouraging girls in families, Importance of involving 50% population in India to improve medal winning possibilities, Mentoring and Support by senior athletes for positive role modelling, Projecting Women in Media, Promote workplace teams, social sports and family activities, having Administrator/Coaches in Women Sports … they must be in charge, and Career options such as Physiotherapist and Coaching.

Franz Gastler spoke at length about the Work done in Jharkhand and Bihar where child marriage rate is high. They have taught 150 girls about positive values, honesty and team spirit. He showed a video about how they fought poverty, humiliation to reach the heights and Winning in Spain to bring glory to India. The Story of fighting the odds was inspiring. He highlighted about what you can achieve even without lots of money. He talked about starting small, going it right, keeping it simple, keeping politics out and Integrating Sports with Development

Ms. Indu Puri spoke about Quantity leading to Quality, Broadbasing and increasing opportunities, Campaigns/Positive messaging

Mr. Sujit Panigrahi spoke about how Sports pays dividend not only in life to play sports, but also to live a better life, Be Active, Heath and Well-being, Active Lifestyle He gave Statistics of CWG and Olympics during last 12 years in terms of  (a) Medals: By the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Indian women athletes won 37 medals, up from zero just 12 years before (b) Participation: The number of Indian female athletes who competed at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics (six) nearly quadrupled to 23 in 2012. He spoke about the Challenges of Lack of Access (near homes), Safety and Transportation, Social Stigma, Decreased Quality of Experience/availability of quality coaches, Costs/Family budgets getting slashed, Lack of Positive Women Role Models, Role of Govt, Federation and Corporates.

The Solutions which were considered by the panelists included Building Centers of Excellence, Increasing the no. of Role Models/Golden Girls of India, Grassroot level development (expand the base | Quantity leads to Quality), Safety, Facilities, improving Cultural Sensitivity, Improve Affordability by Increased involvement in Sports Administration. The concluding remarks was that Sports is a great weapon for empowerment for Women, and at the moment it is happening silently. The effects will be more visible a decade from now on.

International Convention on Football Business- FICCI Goal 2013 India Football

FICCI Goal 2013 India Football: This International Convention on Football Business was organized by FICCI on 14 and 15 February 2013.

There was Welcome Address by Mr. Sidharth Birla, Senior Vice President, FICCI, followed by Addresses by Mr. Aloke Malik, Chairman, FICCI Sports Committee, and MD, ESPN Star Sports (India). Mr. P.K. Deb, Secretary, Youth Affairs and Sports, Mr. Vincent Subramanium – FIFA Technical Development Officer, (SAFF) and Mr. Sanjiv Paul, Co-chairman, FICCI Sports Committee & Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel. Inaugural Address was done by Mr. Praful Patel, Hon’ble Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, & President, All India Football Federation (AIFF).

On Day 1 of the International Convention, there were 3 panel discussions. Session I was a Panel Discussion on “Football in Asia: Opportunities for India in youth development?”. Asia should be a force to reckon with over half the world’s population, and the FIFA World Cup returning in 2022. There is rapid development of competitions like the Chinese Super League and AFC Champions League. But with allegations of corruption in some regions, a void in leadership and the ever increasing popularity of European football, what really is the future for Asian football and especially for India? This session analyzed the importance of youth development and PYKKA project in the overall scenario besides looking at the role of stakeholders like the government, AIFF, AFC and FIFA.

Session II was a Panel Discussion on “Reconceptualizing of Indian League system: Club v/s City Franchisee”. After the success of IPL in cricket, it has been proven that Indians like city based league system but what is going to be the future of historic Football Clubs in India. What kind of league model should Indian football follow -MLS/ IPL model or Club/EPL model? This session will discuss taking football to the masses.

Session III was another Panel Discussion on “Football Stadia: Sustenance & Legacy of “White Elephant”. Infrastructure development continues to be a hot topic when it comes to exploring the future of football in India. Panelists agreed that India needs more stadiums to reach its football potential, however the sustainability of these stadiums remains a critical issue. Important topics included public private partnerships, commercialization, marketing, programming, pitch maintenance and legacy need to be discussed before breaking ground.

On Day 2, there were 3 panel discussions which discussed about Football in India and the Importance of U-17 FIFA World Cup to building India’s stature in the world.

Session IV was a Presentation and Panel Discussion on AIFF Vision for Development of football. Two of the most critical stakeholders in the development of football in India are AIFF and IMG RIL. Both organizations have created master plans, entitled Lakshya 2022 and Vision 2026 respectively, which map out the future of the sport in the country. Representatives from both groups shared their plans with convention delegates.

Session V was Panel Discussion on “Importance of U-17 FIFA World Cup”. The FIFA World Cup is the premier football property in the world. It serves as the perfect platform for countries to come together to celebrate the beautiful game and for the host nation to leverage the power of football to build its own economy and football landscape. A successful bid for India in its effort to host the 2017 U-17 FIFA World Cup could be the catalyst the country needs to put itself on the global football map. Mr. Sujit Panigrahi, CEO, Fitness 365 & Former Additional Director General (Head – Technology), CWG, was a Panelist in this Discussion, and shared his experiences of Commonwealth Game. He discussed the importance of U-17 FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee using the existing large and trained talent pool that CWG Delhi 2010 has created in form of 34 different Functional Areas for the smooth conduct of games. He also talked about the importance of starting the Planning Phase early for U-17 FIFA World Cup, ensuring that the Operations Plan is in place and follow the plan and delivery schedule as per laid down timelines so that Time and Costs can be kept under control. Other panelists included Mr. Vincent Subramanium – FIFA Technical Development Officer, (SAFF) and Mr. Jim Selby, Technical Director, Asian Football Confederation.

Session VI was about Case Studies related to Unique Initiatives and Success Stories in Indian Football. The Presenters discussed about their experiences and success stories with respect to developing Football at Grassroot and Professional Levels.

VARIndiaIT ICT in Education 2013: Best Practices For Simplifying Technology For Schools

The event comprised of an interesting and interactive panel discussion. The theme of the panel discussion was ‘ICT in Education and its Benefits’. The session was extremely informative and highly appreciated by the audience.

The panel discussion was moderated by Deepak Kumar Sahu, Publisher, VARINDIA. The take away point from the moderator of the session was that the uses of ICT is making major differences in the way students are learning and the approach of the teachers. Regardless of all the limitations discussed, ICT benefits the education systems to provide quality education in alignment with constructivism, which is a contemporary paradigm of learning.

Sharad Agarwal of Fracton Technologies, said, “Technology is available and the consumer is interested, but the price factor becomes an issue.” C.S.Arora, Senior Consultant, Ministry of HRD, Department of Higher education, Govt. of India, opined, “Teachers should be more techno savvy than students. But the actual scenario is the opposite as of now. Thus, there is a gap in e-literacy.” Tarun Malik of Microsoft, pointed out, “It is important to understand what technology should is important to reach to the masses.

Sujit Panigrahi of Fitness 365, said, “Changing the mindset is very important. It is important to make the educational institutions the importance of technology in education.”

Vijay Shukla of Eduvisors, opined, “Radio is a very important means of communication, it has the ability to reach out at extremely low cost. It is extremely beneficial for adult education.”Harold D’Costa of Intelligent Quotient Security, said, “The beauty of technology is when making the right use at the right time and at the right place.
