Musical Hoops

Movement skills/concepts

Skipping walking or jumping, and relationships (with others).

Set-up

Hoops, background music.

In a defined hard area, children in pairs stand inside a hoop, holding it at waist height.

Activity

Each pair skips around the area to the music, staying inside the hoop while moving in the same direction and at the same pace. When the music stops, each pair joins another pair by stacking the hoops together and getting inside them. Groups continue to combine with others in this way until as many children as possible are inside the stacked hoops.

Variation

Modify the use of hoops: Hoops are stationary on the floor and the children skip around and jump inside when the music stops. One hoop is removed each time the music stops. Children work together to ensure that everyone (or some part of everyone) becomes part of the remaining hoop.

Vary locomotor skills: Try walking or jumping.

 

 

Letter Walk

Letter Walk

Aim

  • Students will be able to perform the locomotor skills and will be able to call out what letter (or number) they have landed on
  • To give students an opportunity to practice a variety of locomotor skills and numbers, letters and shape understanding

 Equipment Required

  • Four cones for boundaries (same color).
  • Spot marker for every kid.
  • 1 hoop per child.
  • Music Player & pen drive.
  • Laminated Letter cards (or number cards)

 Play Area Set-Up

Layout letter cards over a large area. Show students the area around the cards where they will be walking/running and other locomotor skills.

Activity 1 Description

  • Have children walk it once to show them where they need to stay. Explain that they will be moving around the letters by doing a motor skill. What are motor skills? Have them answer
  • Students will do the motor skill (called out by teacher) until the music is turned off. Each student goes to an EMPTY letter card and stands there. The teacher calls randomly on
  • Children and asks what letter they are standing on, or what sound that letter makes, or COW, who is standing on the first sound in COW.
  • Then continue the game by calling out new motor skill and turning on music

 

Bean Bag Balancing

Aim

  • Experiment with different ways of tossing and then catching a bean bag with control
  • Demonstrate underhand toss to hit a target with bean bag

Equipment Required

  • Four cones for boundaries (same color).
  • Spot marker for every kid.
  • Music Player & pen drive.
  • 1 bean bag per student.

 Play Area Set-Up

Students scattered in the activity area, each with a bean bag.

Activity Description

Today we’re going to have fun exploring activities with Bean Bags. I will show you a movement activity and then you’ll repeat after me

With bean bag balancing on head, shoulders, or back:

  • The balance on one foot. Shift to balance on the other foot.
  • Sit and then stand again. If the beanbag falls, try again.

In plank position, slowly slide your feet around in a circle.

Wrap Up: (2 minutes)

What was the objective of your class? Can you tell me the shape of the beanbag? Color of beanbag?

Parachute Dance

Aim

The students will be able to perform a parachute dance which promotes rhythm, coordination, the development of upper body strength, and locomotor skills

Equipment Required

Four cones for boundaries (same color), Beach ball Music Player & pen drive. Parachute.

Play Area Set-Up

  • Spread the parachute completely and lay it on the ground
  • Have children hold the handles of the parachute or rolled up edges

Activity Description

When the music begins hold for 4 sets of 8 counts.

Step-Close Sequence:

1-16 — Step R to R side and close L, taking weight onto the L foot (2 counts). Repeat the move for a total of 8 times for a total of 16 counts. On the last count, tap with the L foot so that the move can be reversed.

1-16 — Step L to the L side and close R, taking weight onto the R foot (2 counts). Repeat the move for a total of 8 times for a total of 16 counts.

Shake and Sway Sequence:

1-8 — Stand in place and gently shake the parachute up and down to the music.

1-8 — Repeat the shaking movements.

1-8 — Students will all sway to the R for 2 counts, back to the center for 2 counts, to the L for 2 counts, and back to the center for 2 counts.

1-8 — Repeat the swaying movements for 8 more counts.

The Mushroom Move Sequence:

1-8 — Raise the arms above the head making the parachute lift into the air to form a “mushroom

PE EFFECTIVENESS

For younger children, you can slow down the step-close sequence and only do half

as many movements Ask the students all the sequences and clear all doubts.

 

Noodle Tug

Aim

  • Keep the ball noodlette for maximum possible time till it hits the floor
  • Understand self-space while striking with hand or volleying

Equipment Required

1 Noodlette per student, 1 Spot Marker per student, Hoops

Activity Description –

Activity 1: NOODLE TUG

Students will need a partner for this activity. Each pair will have either a long noodle or a noodle for the activity. Each partner will hold one end of the noodle and while keeping their feet side by side squat down over their feet. When one student gives the start signal, they will try to push or pull the noodle to make their partner lose their balance and move their feet, touch the floor, or release the noodle. When the round is over, the partner who lost will say “go” for the next round.

Activity 2: NOODLE SOUP

Split the class into 4 equal teams. The students may line up behind the cones facing the center of the game area. Two players will be picked to be the “crazy chefs”. The “crazy chefs” will attempt to protect their noodle soup (small noodle pieces) from the hungry students by hitting them with their spoons (longer noodle pieces). Each team will have two players at a time attempt to collect the food in the middle (they may only take one noodle piece at a time). The players who are attempting to collect food will be holding flags in their hands. If the “crazy chef” hits a hungry student, the student must go back to their team without some food and let another player go. After a few minutes, pick two new “crazy chefs” and continue the game. See how many pieces of soup each team can collect.
