Aim

 Practice bowling skills

Equipment Required

  • 2 ball
  • 10 cones & 2 stumps (10-14 per group)

 Play Area Set-Up

  1. Mark out the playing area with 4 markers, size dependent on the number of players
  2. Designate the Bowler Goaler area with 3 markers at each end

Activity Description

  1. Players in possession of the ball can take a maximum of five steps before attempting to pass a teammate. If the ball hits the ground or is intercepted the opposing team takes possession
  2. The object is to pass the ball to the Bowler Goaler in the designated area (where no other players
  3. The ball cannot be intercepted once bowled until after it passes the stumps
  4. If the stumps are hit a goal is scored and the ball is returned to the center for the scoring team to restart the game
  5. If the Bowler Goaler misses the stumps the opposing team begin with the ball from the backline
  6. NO contact is allowed

 Grade Level Progression

 Players can be designated forwards, defenders, etc. with restricted areas to reduce congestion. Stumps should be moved closer to the bowler to allow success

Aim

 Each battery, in turn, to score as many runs as possible

Equipment Required

  • 2 Bats
  • 3 balls
  • 2 tees/saucer cone and 2 stumps

 Play Area Set-Up

  1. Place the ball on the tee
  2. Position the 2 markers at each side of the wicket forward of the batter (near batter = easy, further away more difficult

Activity Description

  1. Each battery, in turn, aims to hit the ball between the foul markers and then run between the running markers
  2. A fielder collects the ball
  3. All others run and line up behind the fielder
  4. The ball is passed back until the last player in the line has it
  5. The last person then runs to touch the stumps at the bowler’s end with the ball to stop the batter running
  6. Repeat for each batter in turn
  7. Batter with the most runs wins

Aim

 Batters in pairs to hit either a ball bowled or off a tee to score as many runs as possible

Equipment Required

  • 2 Bats
  • 3 balls
  • 2 tees/saucer cone and 2 stumps 

Play Area Set-Up

  1. Set up stumps 13 – 16m apart
  2. Place 2 batting tees with a ball on each either side of pitch just forward of batter
  3. Organize players into pairs & number each pair
  4. Maximum 8 per group

Activity Description

  1. Each pair bats for 2 overs (12 balls) & bowls for 2 overs (6 balls each partner). Bowling can be underarm if required
  2. When a partner is bowling, other partner wicket keeps
  3. If ‘bowled’ ball is missed (& doesn’t hit the stumps) or can’t be reached, batter hits the ball from a tee of their choice
  4. Only the hit ball is in play
  5. Batters can be ‘out’ Bowled, Caught or Run Out only
  6. If Batsman is out, they swap ends & continue to Bat
  7. If pairs are not batting or bowling they are fielding
  8. All get a chance to Bat, field & keep the wickets

KEY TEACHING POINTS  – Encourage good sportsmanship (e.g. clapping when good efforts are made, shaking hands, accepting the umpire’s decision, etc.

Grade Level Progression 

  1. Match evenly skilled players to bat/bowl to each other.
  2. Place 1-2 fielders in slips to create more gaps.

Aim 

Practice the batting skills to score runs as a team

Equipment Required

  • 4 Bats
  • 4 balls
  • 2 tees/saucer cone and 4 stumps 

Play Area Set-Up

  1. Divide players into 3 teams of 4 (ideally 12 per game, however, fewer / greater numbers can be accommodated
  2. Team 1 bats, team 2 bowls/wicket keeps & team 3 fields (if only 2 teams one bat the other bowls)
  3. Where numbers allow and a helper coach is present, have the next 4 to bowl as follows: 2 in the field, 2 practicing bowling to the side (rotate after 12 balls)
  4. Use a marker as an additional base if teams have more than 4 players
  5. Place 2 tees either side of the pitch and just forward of the batter

Activity Description

  1. The bowling team bowls from X to the stumps at Y at all times.
  2. Each bowler bowls 6 balls and then the bowling team rotate to bring a new bowler to the crease
  3. If a ‘bowled’ ball is missed (& doesn’t hit the stumps) or can’t be reached, batter hits the ball from a tee of their choice
  4. Only the hit ball is in play
  5. Batters can be ‘out’ Bowled at Y, Caught or Run Out at any set of stumps
  6. Batters rotate to next base if out, no runs are scored on delivery if a run-out occurs
  7. When the batter hits the ball, all 4 batters must run in an anticlockwise direction to the next base.
  8. Batters may run more than one base at a time
  9. One run is scored for each successful run to the next base by all 4 batters
  10. After all bowling team members have bowled 6 balls each team changes roles
  11. The game continues until each team has batted & bowled and the highest-scoring team wins

Grade Level Progression 

  1. Beginner bowlers should stand at the crease and bowl.
  2. Advanced players may use a run-up

Aim 

  • Practice the batting & Fielding techniques

Equipment Required

  • 1 stump
  • 3 markers
  • 1 bat and 1 ball per game 

Play Area Set-Up

  1. Define a playing area through cone markers and pitch by putting stumps for striker & non-striker ends
  2. Place a tee/saucer cone for hitting the ball

Activity Description

  1. The game can be played in teams or by having a fielder replace a batter when they have completed their turn.
  2. The helper rolls the ball to the batter who hits the ball into the field and then runs around one of the markers to the left or right.
  3. The fielders must return the ball to the bowler who can bowl the ball at any time.
  4. Batters can be out in 3 ways – caught by the fielder before the ball hits the ground, bowled either missing the ball or not getting back in time to hit the ball or hit wicket.
  5. Ensure fielders rotate in their positions.

  Grade Level Progression 

  1. Shorten or widen the play area to increase batting & fielding complexities.
  2. For advanced players the ball may be lobbed underarm by the helper)
  3. Instead of Stumps use Buckets where if the bowler hits the stumps the batsman is out and if the ball goes into the buckets while bowling/fielding the complete batting team is out.
