LEARNING OUTCOME

Develop the concepts of finding space, anticipation, teamwork, and deception.

TEACHING CUES

  • Demonstrate the activity using players from the group.
  • Let the game run a little before any intervention – ‘let the kids play!’

ACTIVITY SET-UP AND PROCEDURE

EQUIPMENT:

  • One volleyball or similar per pair
  • A court surface that allows the ball to bounce
  • 6 markers per court

SET-UP:

  • Form pairs – see Form a Group
  • Players in position as shown – player with the ball serves.

ACTIVITY PROCEDURES:

  • The ball must cross the line above waist height.
  • Play continues until one player cannot return the ball after one bounce, or the ball is thrown out of court, or the receiver drops the ball.
  • The serve alternates between players.
  • Play to a specified number of points, (e.g. 5) or a set time limit (e.g. 3 minutes).

Variations

  • Play 3 v 3 – alternate serves between teams. Ensure each player has an opportunity to serve.
  • Restrict the time in possession depending on the ability of the players (e.g. 3 seconds or more).
  • Provide a ‘no-go’ or bounce-free zone.
  • Restrict the type of passes that players can use (e.g. chest pass, one handed pass, overhead pass, underarm pass).
  • Allow students to select different rules to suit their ability and make the competition more even (e.g. one student is allowed two bounces and their opponent only one).

Beat the ball

Beat the ball

Aim

To beat the ball back to the wicketkeeper

Equipment Required

  • 1 ball
  • 8 Cones & 2 stumps per 12 students group

 Activity Description

  1. Form two equal teams
  2. Set up a ‘baseball-type’ diamond with one player on each base and other fielders inside the area
  3. The fielding team should have a wicket-keeper at first base
  4. The batter hits the ball off the tee within the diamond, then runs around the diamond in a clockwise direction
  5. When the fielder gathers the ball it is first thrown to the wicket-keeper at the stumps from where the ball was hit and then from base to base in an anti-clockwise direction
  6. If the batter beats the ball back the batting team score a run, if the batter does not, the batter is out

 Grade Level Progression

  1. Game: Introduce new rules such as if players are touched in possession they lose the ball and the ball can be rolled along the ground
  2. Skills: Have 2 players working together to practice technique under no pressure

Aim

Play cricket using all the skills learned earlier

Equipment Required

  • 2 Bats
  • 3 balls
  • 2 Batting Tees
  • 2 Stumps
  • 8 Cones

  4. When a partner is bowling, other partner wicketkeepers.
  5. A wide ball (one that cannot be reached by the batter in normal stance) results in a free hit from the offside tee and the ball must be hit forward (a hit behind the stumps does not score).
  6. The batter only gets one swing at the free hit and the fielders cannot move closer until after the free hit has been taken.
  7. FIELDERS CANNOT FIELD ANY CLOSER THAN 10M FROM THE BATTER
  8. Only the hit ball is in play.
  9. Batters can be ‘out’ Bowled, Caught, or Run Out (& only run out from a free hit).
  10. IF BATTERS GO OUT THEY SWAP ENDS & CONTINUE TO BAT.
  11. Runs made are doubled if hit into the double score zone.
  12. Fielding team scores 5 bonus runs for each wicket they take.
  13. After the batting team has all batted reverse roles.
  14. Highest score wins

Key Teaching Points: Encourage discussion by teams to develop strategies for results (e.g. who bowls to who, field placements, etc).

Aim

Wicket keeping catching & movement skills

Equipment Require

  • 5 balls
  • 2 Cone
